An Obesity Epidemic – Can It Be Reversed?

As many of you know the United States has an obesity epidemic. Actually it is a global epidemic. How did it happen and what can be done about it, if anything?an obesity epidemic

Just to give you a few statistics, about 1 in every 3 adults in the U.S. is obese. And 1/3 more Americans are overweight.

Doctor, Doctor

The medical costs for this problem is $150 billion a year. Obesity and being overweight contributes to Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancers. One child in every six  is overweight. What are they going to be like when they are grown.

How did it happen? Well I think it’s apparent. Fast food restaurants, take-out, more junk and processed foods line the shelves at our favorite grocery stores. All of that contributes to the problem.

The commercials on TV that are food related make the food look so appetizing, you’re ready to jump off the couch and go get some.

I recently saw a billboard that said, “Be aware of what you put in your body, you have to live there”. I really thought that was very powerful and truthful.

If we could all think of that whenever we started to put junk food in our system, how much better off we would be.

The classic American diet consists of extra large portions of fried  foods and large servings of fast food and sugary drinks  from your local drive-thru.

Then there’s the pizza, chips, tacos. Not including the sweet desserts like ice cream, apple pie, brownies. I could go on and on.

Then we spend 20 billion dollars a year on weight loss, ranging from diet pills, books, diet programs like Weight Watchers to expensive surgeries..

Most of our schools serve high carb and high fat foods because they are cheaper and have a longer shelf life than fresh fruits and vegetables. Plus the kids won’t eat the food that are better for them. They’re used to the junk food they have been fed since they were little.

Also the vending machines are filled with junk foods and processed foods. Sodas and fruit juices that are available are loaded with sugar and calories. And the kids are so conditioned to that type of eating it’s going to be very hard to change their taste buds.woman eating lots of food

What to do

There are many avenues to take if you want to lose weight. The internet has a wealth of information on the many different approaches to weight loss. This website is mostly about fasting, juice fasting, intermittent fasting to help you get started.

I know that juice fasting was very beneficial for me. I knew what I was going to have in the course of a day, I wasn’t hungry and I stuck to it to lose the weight.

I planned around my schedule when I knew there weren’t any food-related functions I had to attend, so it went very smoothly. So plan ahead and get started. You will be so proud of yourself when you start seeing the pounds fall off.

Moving more

Another reason the population in the U.S. is overweight is because we are too sedentary. Remote controls, elevators, computers, trains, buses, and cars are so much a part of our life, what would we do without them. Start walking!

 

If you are overweight and want to change things, you can. Start with baby steps. If you haven’t exercised in a while, start with a 15 minute walk.

Do that for a week and then keep increasing the walk by 5 minutes a week. Before you know it you will be able to walk an hour. Which is what is recommended. If you can get build up to an hour a day, then you might want to try walking poles.

They could increase your calorie burn by 50%, how much  healthy you would feel and be. And walking with walking poles is so good for you and much more fun so, Let’s get started.

So if you and your family are overweight or obese, do something about it. It doesn’t take much. Getting started is the hard part, but you will feel so much better and your family will thanks you for getting them on the road to a healthy lifestyle.

Weight Loss Motivation

Motivation is hard to come by. Where do you get weight loss motivation? Do you pull it out of thin air  or is it something you can develop? If it were something you had inside of you, you would not need to be  read this article.

Let’s face it, we all lack motivation sometimes, especially for weight loss. I have fallen off the weight loss bandwagon so many times, I can’t even count. My favorite saying is I’ll start tomorrow, but take it from me tomorrow never comes.weightloss motivation

Start today

Even if it’s later in the day, start today. There will always be a birthday party, cook-out or some other function to disrupt  your diet intentions, but don’t let it deter you. Stick to your good intentions, don’t let anyone sway you. There is always one in the crowd.

Keep a journal, write down everything, what you ate, portion size, how you felt. Were you sad, angry, happy, or frustrated. All these emotions come into play when you are trying to lose weight.

All these little steps help keep you going in the right direction. Did you exercise, if not why? Being lazy! Write it down, it will make you more aware.

Keeping a true and honest journal will be very helpful to get a true picture of your good habits and your bad ones also.

Also don’t be afraid to write out how you are really feeling, this is also very important. It will help you get a true picture of your strengths and weaknesses. No one has to see it.

I know I tend to be a grazer, I have to make myself eat a meal, or else I would just pick all day.

Unless I’m fasting or juice fasting. For some reason  I seem to have more motivation when I juice fast or fast.

Another thing, don’t call it a diet, consider it a life-style change, which it will have to be to be successful. You need to get off the roller-coaster and keep the weight off for good.

Sometimes a little help with an appetite suppressant is just what you need to get you started. This is getting a lot of press lately.

Also, don’t neglect exercise. Just 30 minutes a day will jump-start your weight loss. A treadmill is a great way to get in 30 minutes of exercise, no matter what the weather.

Takes it one day at a time. Even if you fall many times, get back up and give it another try. Remember, we only fail if we quit trying. Nothing in this world worth having comes easy.

Think about your mind-set. That can be very important. If you think you can’t do it, it’s true. If you think you can do it, it’s true! Train yourself to always think positive thoughts. It will be a very strong motivator.

Like the saying goes, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting change”

Why do you want to lose weight?

Is it to fit into a smaller size clothes or wear a skimpy bathing suit to the beach. Those are all great reasons, but the most important one is your health.

If you are 15 to 20 pounds over weight you definitely need to lose weight for your health. Just being 20 pounds overweight can tax you heart, put stress on your knees, raise your blood pressure and eventually cause many other problems like heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. weightloss motivation

What Determines A Fast

In this article I will explain to you what determines a fast. A true fast is abstaining from all foods and liquids (except water).what is a fast

A fast can be a very normal process to help with healing and rebuilding the body from within.

Unfortunately, in today’s society we are conditioned to eat constantly, 4 – 6 meals a day, plus snacks. Our bodies need a rest from the constant barrage of food needing to be digested and processed. We are not meant to eat continually .

Our bodies need a chance to rebuild out cells and heal from within and detox by giving it a rest.

Giving your body a rest from food and drinks (except water) will help insure the natural healing process. Your cells can rebuild and start the natural healing process.

The amount of time that you do a fast is certainly an individual choice, depending on how well your body adjusts.

My first water only fast, I started getting headaches and dizziness the second day. So I had some broth and that helped and I was able to continue the fast for about a week. I have heard of 60 day fasts, but make sure you are supervised by a health care professional.

Always get a doctor’s approval before starting a fast or any other major change in your eating habits.

Individuals that should not fast:

  • Pregnant or nursing women.
  • Eating disorders
  • A medical condition- liver, kidneys or very frail
  • Children
  • After surgery or have a major illness

Fasting is a way for your body to help heal itself from the inside out. Many people have been known to improve different health problems by fasting and giving the body a chance to heal. Diabetes, strokes, high blood pressure, even some forms of cancers have been improved with fasting.

In today’s society, we pop a pill for every ailment, as if that is the answer. We have been conditioned by the medical profession that is the only answer. Unfortunately, many of us fall into that trap thinking that is the easiest and quickest way to better health.what is a fast

The Best Fasting Diet

What do you think is the best fasting diet? Well, that is in the eyes of the beholder. There are many different fasting diets available, almost too many to mention. I think it is what works best for you and your lifestyle.water fasting

The food and drug administration quite a few years ago recommended that Americans consume 3 balanced meals a day and 2 snacks.

How did that work out, Americans are heavier than ever and diseases are running rampant. Something has to change. But what?

Are you overweight or fighting obesity. Well join the club. Obesity has reached record numbers and is still on the increase. 45-50 million Americans are always on some type of diet or weight loss program and getting fatter.

Why doesn’t anything work?

Years ago when we wandered the world, we ate when we could find food, either by gathering fruit and berries. Hunting for meat and sometimes not eating for a few days.

Today everything is instant, there is a fast food restaurant on every corner and the grocery store down the street is filled with every kind of processed foods imaginable. So it takes tons of willpower not to have it available all the time.

As Americans we have become very complacent about our weight and our health. If we don’t feel well we go to the nearest pharmacy or doctor and get a prescription to fix all our aches and pains.

When in truth many of our sicknesses could be fixed by losing weight and eating the proper diet. Unfortunately we are all looking for the quick fix. Our diets consist of fast foods, fried foods and sugar-laden desserts and numerous processed foods.

There is a better solution. Thanks to world wide communication and the internet, better alternatives are available and known now.

Fasting diets, detox diets, intermittent fasting diets to name a few are available at our fingertips. It still take a certain amount of determination and will power, but weight loss and improved health is possible, if you want it.

Fast

1 popular diet is the 5:2 diet, which simply means you eat normally for 5 days and limit your calories to 500-600 calories on 2 days a week. Also referred to as the Fast Diet created by British Dr. Michael Mosley.

Eat once a day

Another popular fasting diet is the Intermittent Fasting Diet. On this diet you eat for a set time frame. The rule of thumb is after your evening meal, no more eating until your next evening meal. This a little difficult to get accustomed to, but you will be surprised how quickly you will adapt. No more breakfasts. Just think of the time you save getting ready for work in the morning!best fasting diet

You will have to develop will-power to make this work, but after a few days you will see a noticeably change in your ability to not be tempted  to overeat or eat the wrong foods.

Water, Water, Everywhere

Water fasting is just what it says. Water, just water. No food at all. Water fasting has been done for hundreds of years.

Many different “rules” have been linked to water fasting. Just a little water, lots of water, everyone has a different idea of what is the best way to water fast. I think drink water when you are thirsty and you will be fine. Just remember to check with your healthy care provider before embarking on this or any change in your eating habits.

It’s like anything, practice makes perfect. You have to want this enough to sacrifice eating all that junk food. Your body will thank you for it and in a little while (depending on how much weight you have to lose) you will be so proud of yourself. Plus you will feel so much better , that you will not want to fill your body with all that junk food.

Also any weight loss will be beneficial to your health. Many of your health problems will improve and your sense of well-being will be greater.
