How Much Weight Can I Lose in A Month With Intermittent Fasting?

Did you put on some weight during the holidays. Don’t feel bad, it’s very common to gain during the festive holiday season.new year's celebration

We let our guard down and put on some extra weigh. Well, now is the time to get control of the problem, before it gets out of hand. Instead of a few pounds to lose, if you don’t tackle the problem now, you will have 10 to 15 pounds to lose.

Have you heard of intermittent fasting for quicker weight loss?  Let’s see if I can explain it to you.

Intermittent Fasting

This might be the perfect solution for you, a great way to shed those holiday  pounds in a hurry.

If you are new to intermittent fasting or IF, let me sort it out for you.

Intermittent fasting is a form of fasting to lose weight faster than a regular low-fat diet.

It just means fasting for a certain time frame. Some people fast 2 days a week. Eat your dinner say at 6:00 in the evening and then no food or caloric beverages until 6:00 the next day.

Some people fast for a certain length of time in a day. They skip breakfast and maybe lunch and then have a normal dinner.

It’s a specific pattern of eating and not eating in a set time frame. You set up the time frame in the way you think it will work best for you.

One of the most popular ways to do this is the 16-8 plan. You fast for 16 hours and have a window of eating for 8 hours. That does not mean you continually eat for 8 hours, but have a lunch and dinner before you fast again. So at 8 o’clock  in the evening you stop eating, snacks, everything.

When you get up in the morning just coffee, tea or a non-caloric beverage, no breakfast, nothing until your lunch meal. That is considered a 16 hour fast. That is a popular way to do intermittent fasting and a great way to get those extra pounds off in a short amount of time.

But,if you want good results, you need to plan your meals carefully. Don’t overeat in your eating time frame, that won’t work, especially if you want to lose fast. Try to follow a sensible eating plan, I’ve heard that some people have had great results incorporating low carb with this strategy for even faster results.

Many people frown on fasting because they don’t know much about it. Our ancestors fasted all the time. Many for religious reason and many out of necessity. The large box store, super food stores were not available years ago and there was no refrigeration to store food in anyway.
Going back even further our forefathers had to find their own food. So there were times food was not available for a day or two.Not like today, food is in abundance causing us severe weight loss issues that were unheard of many, many years ago. Enter the 2 week diet!!

The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

We have had it drilled into us that we need to eat 3-4 even 6 times a day. If we follow that protocol all we will be doing is thinking about food and preparing food. I’m not a doctor, but I don’t see how that is good for us. How can consuming food constantly be healthy? We need to give our digestive tract a rest once in a while.

When you fast all night your body is in prime fat-burning state. That’s because your insulin levels are low after fasting all night. Plus, your growth hormones are always high in the morning.

But, when you eat breakfast, usually high-carb, your insulin levels rise and stop the fat-burning process.

As in everything there are many ways to do a fasting program. Many people like to fast by eating one meal a day, others fast by not eating for a set period of time, say a week or more. Others fast once or twice a week. There are many different ways to fast, juice fasting, total water fasting for a certain amount of time. You have to figure out which method will work the best for you and go for it. If you have been following the Paleo diet you will find it easier to fast due to the fact you have been eating very low carb.

Fasting :

  • reduces insulin in the body,
  • promotes growth hormone
  • gives your metabolism a good boost

Many things change in your body when you do intermittent fasting. This is what can change:

  • Less likely to get heart disease
  • you will lose weight, most times noticeably amounts
  • chances decrease of becoming diabetic
  • decrease in inflammation
  • Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are less likely
  • brain function improves
  • less chance for cancer

Good solid reasons to take care of your body and do everything to keep it functioning at it’s best possible level.

I think this approach to eating and keeping your weight in the normal levels will put you on the path to a long and healthy life.

  1. I have read many articles related to diet and the best ways to lose weight and one thing that was consistent was that taking in small amounts of food regularly stops the body from going into storage mode to bridge the gaps between meals as it knows that there will be a constant supply over the day.

How does intermittent fasting relate to the bodys natural mechanism to store energy in the form of fat to bridge the time that you are fasting?

    • Hi Richard, Thanks for your comments. Intermittent fasting allows the body to use the stored fat in place of food to burn as energy, causing the body to lose weight. Does that make sense? Thanks again for your comments and question, Deanna

  2. I did actually look into the topic of intermittent fasting just before Christmas as a way of trimming down my abs section, but I’m still unsure if it’s the right choice for me or not.

I need something that I can rely on going forward, and something tells me this intermittent fasting cannot really be a lifestyle change or diet change for the long term – would I be right in thinking so?

    • Hi Chris, Many people use intermittent fasting as a way of life. It’s an easy way to keep the pounds from creeping on and does not take any preparation  or planning. It’s in all of what you get used to. I had a neighbor years ago, she had 4 children and was very thin. I asked her how she did. She would eat a piece of fruit during the day and a normal meal at night. I don’t think she had ever heard of intermittent fasting. That was just normal for her. Thanks for your comments, Deanna

  3. Hi Deanna Martin, I have read your whole article about weight losing method through intermittent fasting. I found that your article is perfect solution for me. I have little bit fat on my belly and some time I feel hungry when I fast long time. But I feel always better when I fast and lose some fat for long time fasting. But when participate in different occasion, party and special feast, I feel extra fat in my belly again. I think it might be possible when I live alone for long time. Do you have any suggestion for me?

    • Hi Mzakapon, Thanks for your comments. My suggestion to you is if you are planning on a special occasion to fast prior to that function and you won’t feel that extra bellyfat. Maybe take off 5 to 7 pounds before the party and eat carefully at the party. Thanks again for the comments, Deanna

  4. Hello, Deanna!

This is very good content! I love the way you explain everything, but I’m not sure about a thing.

I belive breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and also it has to be the richest. It brings the necessary amount of energy to start the day, and also, seen that usually we are active in the first part of the day, it is not going to bring extra fat (I guess).

Now it depends on every human body metabolism, but still, I’m not sure not having a breakfast is good for your health. Or maybe if it is only for a short period of time, just to lose some weight, it should be alright.

I’m telling you this, because I used to not have breakfast for a long time and I didn’t feel very well. After I started to eat in the morning I became to have more energy and to be more motivated and active.

I’m not an expert. This is just my humble opinion.

What do you think? It is ok to skip breakfast or the other meals of the day?

    • Hi Anna, Thanks for the insightful comments. It’s interesting that you feel better after a breakfast, myself, I feel very lethargic, with little energy. I guess everyone’s body is different. But I do know that anyone who is very overweight will not have much energy any time of the day, and they need to get that weight off for improved health.

  5. This article is very interesting! It make me think about all our ways of organizing time from a meal to another! It’s a sort fo “meal-centered” way of leaving that probably come from our past, when food vas actually a real problem. Now that we don’t have food as a problem (fortunately, for who lives in States where food it is not!) maybe we should have less interest in food. But it seems that meals Have a social function too: meeting people, have romance, meet parents and family… everything happen around a table and sharing food is a great way to share good feelings.

It seems that we have to find a good balance between our life style and the “social needs” that food provides…

    It’s an interesting theme!

    • Hi, Miche, Thanks for the comments. Yes food is and always has been a big part of our celebrating and getting together. That is the problem, finding the right balance between too little and too much. Hopefully we can find the right balance. Thanks again, Deanna

  6. Hi! Yeah, after December has gone by with all its festivities and delicious plates, it’s time to get back on track! I have heard about intermittent fasting, and have decided to give it a try this year. I’m really grateful I found your site because you take time to explain it from the very beginning.

I will follow this 16-8 plan. It seems quite easy. And I’m happy to discover that fasting also has it’s benefits. Thank you very much for this post!
