Water fasting is very common in many religious circles and has been done for many, many years. All religions have different reasons for fasting.
Some to show our commitment to our faith, another to show sacrifice for our faith and also to show strength in our faith and God.
Fasting for health reasons
If you are extremely overweight water fasting is a great way to jump-start your weight loss. The pounds will come off quickly and that will help you stay motivated to get to your ideal weight. But I will recommend that you check with your health care provider before you start any diet or fasting program. Especially because water fasting is very drastic.
Here’s how to water fast. You may want to start with a 1 day fast or a 3 day fast to get your body adjusted to fasting. Both are a great way to introduce yourself and your body to fasting.
If you start with a seven day water fast you can lose upwards of 10 pounds or more depending on how much weight you have to lose. I knew someone who lost 30 pounds in seven days. The first couple of days are the hardest. You will have cravings, but they will disappear or lessen after that.
You may have side effects such as headaches, dizziness or nausea. But the side effects will subside after a few days.
Make sure if you are going to water fast that you do it correctly. A week before you start your fast give up red meat, processed foods, sugar, sodas, and alcohol. Also eat very light meals. This gives your system a chance to prepare and not be shocked when you go into the fast.
Give up caffeine, diet sodas and stick to water or club soda. Also drink chicken broth once or twice a day and that will help with the hunger. You can flavor your drinks with fresh lemon or lime.
Make sure you consume at least 64 ounces of water a day or more if you can. The water will flush out all the toxins and impurities from your system and you will start to feel less bloated within a few days. Your body will welcome the rest you are giving it and helping to overcome the addictions you are filling your body with. In the beginning you will lose water weight, but then the fat will start to disappear as you continue to fast. You are giving your body a well deserved rest. Also you will have a since of well-being and accomplishment for your determination and willpower.
Make sure you rest and get the proper amount of sleep every night.
As far as being safe, you can go weeks without food but only 3 days without water. But always check with your health care provider before starting any fast or diet, especially if you have any medical conditions or are on any medications.
Don’t engage in strenuous or heavy exercise. It may cause you to become lightheaded or faint. You can do light exercise such as walking, biking (no hills), swimming. If you are into weight lifting cut down on the amount of weight that you lift.
If you are 50 pounds or over you are going to develop some serious health concerns due to the excess weight, if you don’t have some issues already.
Walking puts a lot of strain on your knees and joints when you are overweight. I read that every 5 pounds of extra weight put 15 pounds of pressure on your knees. So all the additional pounds of pressure on your knees is not good. That should be enough motivation to get that weight off.
Add all the other health issues that being overweight causes and we should all strive to get rid of that excess weight.
Our sense of well being will improve and our outlook on life will be far better. We will move much easier , fit into an plane seat easier, in general life will be easier. Plus as we lose the pounds our self worth will improve dramatically. You will be amazed at how much better you will feel, physically and mentally.
But if you don’t want to water fast, try juice fasting. The results are almost as fast, but it does not seem as drastic. Here is a post you might want to read about juice fasting.
